Silicon Wadi Meets Mediterranean Cool: About Smart Tourism

Tel Aviv Global is committed to cultivating both Tel Aviv’s renowned startup ecosystem and the city’s reputation as a global tourist hotspot.  Smart Tourism is where these two meet.  Set against a backdrop of beautiful beaches, world-class architecture and nonstop nightlife, it was only a matter of time before the city’s thriving tech industry looked to tourism as the next field in which to innovate.

Worldwide, tourism is a multibillion dollar industry, accounting for 9% of the world’s GDP in 2013.  More than 1 billion people traveled domestically or abroad in 2013, with forecasts predicting even higher growth rates in the coming years.

But people aren’t traveling the way they used to.  Apps have replaced guidebooks, and airplane seating has become social.  Smart Tourism allows travelers to trade restaurants for locals’ dining rooms and impersonal hotel stays for locals’ spare bedrooms.  In short, Smart Tourism initiatives help break down borders and introduce travelers to local, authentic experiences and then enhance those experiences, whether through Augmented Reality or crowdsourced tips.

Tel Aviv is at the forefront of innovation in tourism, and we aim to help the scene grow.  If you’re an entrepreneur in the Smart Tourism field, a developer, an investor, or just a guy or gal with an idea, you’ve come to the right place.

Smart Tourism Dome @ IMTM 2015

The International Mediterranean Tourism Market (IMTM) is the largest international tourism trade fair in the Middle East and takes place annually in Tel Aviv.  The trade fair features exhibitors representing almost every aspect of Israel’s tourism market, with many exhibitors representing overseas destinations and organizations.  In 2014, Tel Aviv Global & Tourism erected a ‘Startup Boulevard’ at the trade fair, featuring a dozen select Smart Tourism startups.

Following the initiative’s success, in 2015 even more Smart Tourism startups exhibited in an ‘Innovation Dome’.  We’re always looking for new ways to promote Tel Aviv’s Smart Tourism startup scene, and IMTM provides some of the best exposure around.
